MARINA COVID-19 UPDATE 5.13.20
We have been receiving many calls and emails asking for an update regarding when the marinas will be able to open; and many have told us they are anxious to get out on the lake. Please be assured that we have been working very hard to make that happen for all of you; however, we are not yet prepared to welcome our customers onsite for visits or boat usage. We have provided an update below – it is lengthy, but we ask that you please take the time to read it in its entirety as we expect it will answer many of your questions.
For now, we are asking you to please refrain from visiting the marina until we are prepared. We have several reasons for this. First, we have spent a lot of time working with Placer County in order to return to work. Recreational marinas are not considered essential businesses in California, so we needed approval. We accomplished this by working with other West and North Shore marinas and our Tahoe representative on the Placer County Board of Supervisors. We explained to the Board of Supervisors that marinas need a significant amount of time to prep for the boating season, and we prepared a plan that implemented safety protocols for our staff that followed the CDC, OSHA and State guidance for essential businesses.
Our worksite plans were submitted to our County representative who in turn presented them to the Placer County Health Commissioner. The health commissioner has agreed the marinas can return to work; and as of yesterday, businesses, including marinas, have been given approval to open if certain procedures are put into place regarding to COVID-19.
Last Thursday, May 7th, the State of California posted its “Resilience Roadmap” which provides guidance to businesses that are allowed to reopen. According to the guidelines, before reopening, all facilities must:
This is normally a very busy time of the year for us, but it has been a monumental task to also create, get approved, and implement these necessary procedures and protocols related to COVID-19 to minimize exposures for staff and customers when we do open to the public.
Another reason we are requesting that you refrain from visiting is that we are putting our maximum effort toward getting boats ready as soon as possible for the 2020 boating season. We need to focus our staffs’ time on moving, activating, lake testing and cleaning boats.
We are concentrating on the necessary aspects of boat preparation including transporting boats to the lake, activation of engines and systems, essential repairs, and completing as much of the cleaning package as possible. In a normal year we begin transporting boats to the lake at the beginning of April; this year we were not able to start transporting boats until May.
Many of you may have seen the press release from TRPA issued last Friday regarding releasing the “Tahoe Only” stickers as marinas and launch facilities show their readiness to open. This does not mean that ramps and marinas will be open for boating on the same day we receive these stickers. The release of the stickers will allow marinas to move some boats out onto the lake to their slips, buoys or lifts, so we can continue to bring more boats out of storage. Without the ability to move boats out onto the lake, marinas will need to stop readying boats because they cannot fit additional boats on their property in their in-house racks, slips or buoys.
We appreciate your business very much and we are looking forward to the start of the summer boating season. We believe the best way to get there is to completely focus our time on boat preparation and other necessary administrative processes before we can open to the public. Internally, we are anticipating having all procedures in place, training completed, personal protective equipment in place, and “Tahoe Only” stickers received from TRPA by June 1. We want to be clear that this is not a firm opening date, but it is the date we are working toward to have everything in place that is within our control.
We will continue to send email updates, as well as post current information via the COVID-19 link at the top of our homepage. We ask that you please utilize this feature of our website to keep up to date instead of calling or emailing for updates. This will greatly reduce the amount of the time we are spending answering phone calls and emails; and will allow us to concentrate on preparing to open to the public. Of course, if you have a specific question about service on your boat or documents that you are completing for services this summer; or if you would like to pay your bill, we are happy to discuss these with you by phone or email.
In addition, we will be sending out detailed procedures in the next week or so that will outline the measures we have and will be putting in place; including information on changes we have made to processes or services we offer. We will continue to evaluate our procedures to ensure they are accomplishing our goal of reducing the risk of infection for our staff and our customers.
For our slip and buoy customers, please note that bathroom at the office will not be available this summer as it will be for staff use only. Port-a-potties for use by all our customers will be located near the launch ramp and will contain sanitizer. In addition, portable sinks will also be available.
Lastly, for the health and safety of our staff and customers, we will be filling fuel tanks for our in-house winter storage customers prior to delivering your boat to reduce the need to come back to the gas dock right away and reduce risk of spread and exposure to the virus. If you do not wish to have your boat filled with fuel, please let us know as soon as possible.
Thank you in advance for your doing your part to help slow the spread of COVID-19 while we look forward to boating on the most beautiful lake in the world!
All the best,
Sarah, Darren & The Obexer's Crew
